Our Veiled Chameleon Care

Veiled chameleons are arboreal chameleons (they live in trees or high off the ground). Housing should accommodate this. Different breeders and pet owners use many different cage styles. Our wood/mesh cages are 3' wide x 4' tall x 18" deep with multiple branch systems, artificial vines, and silk leaves. We keep about 4 adult females and alternate the males (one male per cage at a time). Females tend to lay eggs with or without male influence (obviously if not bred the eggs will be infertile). We always have a laying box or bucket filled with packed sand or dirt at the bottom of every female cage. It is extremely important to have a laying box if you have a female that is gravid. If she does not lay her eggs, she will become egg bound and die! Also after laying, she should be fed more than the usual food amount and supplemented more frequently with calcium (we use Miner-all and Repcal). Our males are housed separately in a 2' x 2' x 2' mesh cage. Our babies and hatchlings are separated by date of birth and size and are usually kept in 15 gallon tanks or 50 gallon tubs. If veileds are not supplemented properly they can get Metabolic Bone Disorder (MBD). It's very important that we keep our animals healthy and happy. We use hanging food baskets for easy access and cleanliness. We use a removable plastic cement-tub lined with newspaper at the bottom of the cages for easy cleaning. All of our animals are De-wormed and have been treated for parasites. We feed our animals a combination of (gut-loaded) crickets, mealworms, and leafy greens.  We also monitor the temperature and humidity (we use & recommend Exo-terra's mercury-vapor lamps). For hydration, we use a drip system & frequent water sprays (filtered non-softened water is best).
